After months of speculation and rumors, Google has officially announced its upcoming foldable device, the Pixel Fold. The company released a short teaser video on Star Wars Day, showcasing the device's design, hinge mechanism, inner display, and software. The teaser also hinted at a May 10th announcement, which will take place during Google's annual I/O 2023 developer conference.
Design and Hinge Mechanism
The teaser video gave us a good look at the Pixel Fold's design, including a chunky camera module at the back with three cameras and an LED flash unit. A mysterious grille is also present, though its purpose has yet to be confirmed. The hinge mechanism appears to fold the two halves shut without a visible gap, promising a seamless experience for users.
Inner Display and Software Layout
The Pixel Fold features a rather thick bezel, likely due to its phone-to-tablet form factor. This design choice may make the device easier to hold, and there is also space needed for the inner selfie camera, placed near the top right corner. The software layout looks familiar to a regular Android 13 home screen, but we will have to wait and see what optimizations Google has made for its first foldable device.
The outer display has the Always on Display feature enabled, but we don't have a clear idea of its bezel. However, we do know that the Pixel Fold's form factor is closer to Oppo's Find N2, with a shorter and wider design when folded, as opposed to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4's narrow and taller design.
According to recent reports, the Pixel Fold will be powered by Google's current generation Tensor G2 SoC, which also powers its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. It is expected to have a 120Hz, 5.8-inch OLED outer display (1,080×2,092 pixels) with a 17.4:9 aspect ratio, as well as a 120Hz, 7.6-inch inner display (1,840 x 2,208 pixels) with a 6:5 aspect ratio. The device is said to feature a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. For selfies, it is likely to sport a 9.5-megapixel selfie camera in the outer display and an 8-megapixel camera above the inner display.
The Pixel Fold is an exciting addition to the foldable device market, and we can't wait to see what optimizations Google has made for its first foldable device. With its powerful specifications and unique design features, the Pixel Fold promises to be a formidable competitor to other foldable devices on the market. The device will be officially announced on May 10th, so stay tuned for more updates.
