🌊 EU Clears 102 Indian Marine Units for Export
New Delhi – In a major boost for India’s seafood industry, the European Union (EU) has approved 102 additional marine product units from India, making them eligible to supply seafood to the bloc. With this approval, a total of 604 Indian marine units are now listed by the EU, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The EU is India’s second-largest seafood export destination after the US, and the move is expected to provide a significant push to export growth.
📈 20% Rise in Exports Expected
According to officials, the new approvals could increase India’s seafood exports to the EU by about 20%. The listing of these units had been a long-pending demand from India as the country sought to expand its export footprint.
🦐 Shrimp Exports Hit by US Tariffs
The development comes at a time when India’s shrimp exports – the backbone of its seafood industry – have been hit hard by steep US tariffs of nearly 50%.
In 2024–25, India’s shrimp exports totalled $4.88 billion, contributing to 66% of the country’s total seafood exports.
With the EU expansion, India hopes to diversify markets and reduce dependency on the US.
🌍 Strengthening India–EU Trade
The EU’s move is being viewed as a positive step in strengthening India–EU trade relations. Analysts note that with growing demand in European markets, the approvals could open new opportunities for Indian seafood producers while supporting the livelihoods of millions of fisherfolk.
